June 3 Update

Carrick had a good day today. His vent settings were lowered so he will have to breathe more on his own. And he’s doing ok with that. He’s digesting all of his milk so they upped him to 3cc every hour, and tomorrow they will probably up him to 4cc every hour. He gets another head ultrasound tomorrow to check up on the bleeding in his brain. He wasn’t quite as feisty today; he handled the nurses messing with him (turning him, giving meds, etc) better. The doctor is still talking about coming off the vent later this week if he keeps on track with what he’s doing now. He’s staying over 2 lbs and looking more like a normal baby. So Carrick is progressing! Jenni went to her postpartum doctor visit today; they have no idea why Carrick came so early. They didn’t find a reason. Now to a popular question people ask us: So Carrick is coming home soon, right? Well, no actually. There are certain levels Carrick has to pass in order to come home. First, he has to breathe on his own. There are about 3 more breathing machines after the CPAP before he’s on his own. He has to take 8 bottles a day, and he is unable to eat out of a bottle right now. He has to be over 4 lbs, at least. Those are just a few. Carrick is making progress, but he began so early and small that it will take him longer. He will at least be in the hospital until his due date. No one has even mentioned a time table for him coming home yet. And Jenni and I don’t want to get our hopes up. His six week birthday is Thursday so that is something to rejoice about! Carrick has a big road ahead of him, but God is faithful and will continue to be. More to come.
