June 21 Update

Carrick had a great day today! I held him this morning and then Jenni held him tonight! It's nice having a sneaky nurse. You see, Carrick is only supposed to be held once a day. But we've had the same night nurse a few days in a row so she's comfortable with us, and we're comfortable with her. We're due for a new day and night nurse soon though. Here's how it works: the nurses work from 7 to 7 in 12 hour shifts, so we have a night nurse and a day nurse. We might get the same day nurse 4 days in a row. That's really nice because she knows Carrick, and it's just more comfortable. But then a new nurse will come on and who knows what she'll be like. All the nurses care for Carrick technically the same, but do other, non-medical things differently. Some keep him cleaner. Some are really good at positioning him. Some make sure to use our blankets and things we bring. Some don't do any of that. Some treat us like we just had him. Some treat me like I don't want anything to do with him. Some let us hold him however long we want. Some impose strict holding time limits. It's a toss up. We might go a few days with a new nurse every shift, also. We wish there was a way to request nurses and black-list others. We've even had a nurse who was not good at handling him--nervous parents! That's a little taste of how it is with the nurses. But Carrick got a bath today, and they put him in his little preemie outfit his Grandma bought him! I got some good pictures. Everything else is the same. Still 8cc/hour feeding. Still CPAP pressure 6. His oxygen is still floating around the 30% mark. Carrick is doing great. More to come.
